Spotlight: The Boyles

1. How did you first learn of Lovin’ Spoonfuls?

Mary: We came to learn about Lovin’ Spoonfuls in a few different ways. John was first introduced to the organization through Andy Youniss, one of Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ Board Members, as they were looking for new office space and John could help (John is Vice Chair of Cushman & Wakefield). We were then invited to join the Youniss’ at the Chefs’ Table event in 2019. Soon after, as I am involved with women’s golf at Weston Golf Club, Ashley actually came and spoke at our annual women’s golf charity event, which helped raise money for this great organization. It’s been terrific to learn about the organization over these past few years. We’ve even started to engage our children.

2. Why is food rescue so important to you personally?

John: It’s important because food, and access to it, affects everybody. We have tried to teach our kids about eating healthy, knowing where their food is coming from, the importance of recycling, and most importantly to not waste because there are just so many people that don’t have the same resources.

3. How do you try to reduce food waste in your home?

Mary: We have a garden at home, where we try to grow fresh vegetables. We also support local farming communities and don’t buy in bulk, so as not to waste.

4. What about Spoonfuls inspires you to make an investment in our work?

Mary: Food brings a lot of joy to our family and we try (as best as possible) to share these moments and many meals together. With our extended family (and our shared Italian heritage), food is love. We can’t think of anything that is a deeper expression of love than helping feed people.

John: Once I took a photo of a Lovin’ Spoonfuls truck and sent it to Andy (Youniss) and said, ‘They are sending out love!’ Anything we can do to show the importance of this work to our kids, we will. Our support is our way of sending some care and goodness to others. It has been a privilege to be a part of that.
