From charity to justice
More than food for today
No doubt, the pandemic has changed us. We mourn for those who’ve passed. We stand with those struggling to rebound from the effects of the pandemic: lost jobs, lost wages, less reliable access to healthy food. And we continue to internalize the important lessons we’ve learned over the past 16+ months.
The pandemic further exposed the way people and communities across Massachusetts are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity and the climate emergency. At Lovin’ Spoonfuls, we’ve recommitted ourselves not only to improving access to healthy food for people who need it now, but also – through our participation in local and regional advocacy groups – to long-term food and environmental justice.
From launching Community Advisory Boards as a way to learn directly from people living, working, and accessing food programs in the regions we serve, to current efforts to revamp our food and nutrition education program, Plenty, to focus on culturally-relevant meals, to continuing staff education around Diversity/Equity/Inclusion (DEI), we know it isn’t enough to rescue food and drive away. Being “in the community” means being “in it together” at every stage of the pandemic.
