In the Driver's Seat: Sam Kensley
Tell us about your background! How did you become interested in food rescue?
I spent about 11 years in the foodservice industry, cultivating a love of cooking for people. For as far as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for fresh, delicious food. Going from restaurants and cafes to the nonprofit world was a fascinating learning experience for me. I spent four years at Cradles to Crayons, a Boston-based organization addressing clothing and hygiene insecurity for kids in local communities. Being able to work directly with the organizations and individuals we served was so eye-opening.
What passions do you bring to the job?
I bring a strong relationship to the local community! Within two weeks of starting at Lovin’, I was very happy to be delivering the food we had rescued to a shelter a few blocks from the house I grew up in. Giving back to the community you came from is incredibly important to me.
Have there been any surprises for you in the food you rescue?
I’d say the biggest surprise as far as rescuing food goes is how much of it is in perfect condition. It seems strange that a lot of food didn’t sell, but I’m just glad that it’s being rescued instead of thrown away.
Do your friends and family consider you a good cook?
I am definitely the cook in my group of friends! I keep a few signature recipes on hand: one would be making biscuits from scratch (easier than you think). I also have a secret family cheeseburger recipe which I love to make on the grill all year round.
What would we find in your refrigerator right now?
Homemade pasta sauce. Lots of veggies for stir-frying. Cilantro, jalapeño, and limes.
What’s your favorite childhood food memory?
Thanksgiving with my whole family. The meals were incredible, and the house was full of energy.
Who are your heroes?
Veterinarians and people who advocate for the well-being of animals.
