In The Driver's Seat: With Tyler Crawford

Meet Food Rescue Coordinator, Tyler Crawford, and learn about what drives him.

I’ve been in my role as Food Rescue Coordinator for two years as of this month. I love doing what I do and never miss a day until I’m convinced that I should take some time off for myself. I’ve never taken a first-shift position before [coming to Lovin’ Spoonfuls], but I actually enjoyed transitioning into a morning person. It gives me that extra boost knowing I’m waking up to do good.

There have been many challenges and obstacles in this role that have required me to adapt constantly, including everything from variability in donation sizes to inclement weather to route changes and cancelations. I’d like to think I take these in stride and do my best to rise to the occasion.

Looking back, the most difficult experience was taking part in launching our Hampden County route. I was entirely new to Lovin’ Spoonfuls (and food rescue) and was admittedly quite nervous to be the face of the company in this region. Despite my worries, I formed great relationships with all of our partners and have maintained them throughout our two years together. My route looks a little different than when it began, as some relationships ended due to incompatible schedules or needs, but we’ve gained many new partners, too. Each is a welcome addition to Annie’s (my box truck’s) route every week!

Nowadays, everything continues to move along smoothly. I know my old neighborhoods where I grew up and the surrounding areas better than ever. And after rescuing almost 1 million pounds of food, I still pride myself on being reliable and punctual. When people are relying on you as a source of food, being consistent with deliveries is key. Supplying people in need with healthy produce and meat – more meat than any other route! – with a bit of dairy and baked goods here and there, has kept me in good spirits through hard times.

I don’t know where I would be without this company, but I am grateful to be a Food Rescue Coordinator. My efforts are supported by a phenomenal team in Boston and MetroWest and inspiring partners here in Hampden County. I hope for nothing but further successes in the years to come!
