At Lovin’ Spoonfuls, we’re thankful to have so many dedicated supporters who make our work possible. In this blog, we speak with Irfan Alibhai of the Burkehaven Family Foundation and learn why they chose to support our work.

1. How did you and the Foundation first learn about Lovin’ Spoonfuls?

The Burkehaven Family Foundation first learned about Lovin’ Spoonfuls through our research as we looked for innovative solutions that tied the problems of food insecurity and food wastage. We were looking for organizations that utilized resources that already existed in order to help solve both of these problems by either extending the shelf life of food that would be wasted or getting it to where it needed to be before it became unusable.

2. Why is food rescue so important to your foundation?

From the very inception of the foundation, food rescue has been an idea that we wanted to support and we were proactive about looking for an organization that worked to address this. It is tragic from both a human and efficiency perspective that so many people go hungry while so much food is wasted, here in the United States and across the world. It is also symbolic of so many of the other societal problems that we see, in that the resources exist but they aren’t being deployed to where they are needed.

3. What about Spoonfuls inspired the Foundation to make an investment in our work?

We love that Lovin’ Spoonfuls has come up with a solution to both decrease food waste and food insecurity, through a logistical and supply chain solution. It is smart, elegant, and it works. It provides a tangible benefit to organizations looking to reduce their food waste and is life-changing to the recipients of the food. There are also the knock-on effects as people are less food insecure they are more able to work, study, and have a better quality of life.

4. What are some other ways that the Burkehaven Family Foundation is engaged within the community?

The Burkehaven Family Foundation is also involved with other organizations and initiatives that aim to provide basic human rights such as food, water, education, mental and physical health care, justice, and equity. We feel very fortunate to be in a position to engage in this work and feel a deep sense of responsibility to recognize our privilege and use what we have for the betterment of others.
