Welcome, Keyton Sheely!

Lovin’ Spoonfuls recently added a new Development Manager to our team. Get to know Keyton in this Q&A.

How did you arrive at Lovin’ Spoonfuls?

Lovin’ Spoonfuls found me! Erin Keohane, our Chief Marketing & Development Officer, reached out about the Development Manager position on LinkedIn. At the time, I wasn’t looking for a new role, but I had worked with Spoonfuls years before when I worked in development at a Spoonfuls’ partner organization. Every Wednesday, I’d see the Spoonfuls truck pull up with fresh produce, whole grains, dairy, and lean meat for our weekly food pantry. I’d see the relief on our participants’ faces when they saw Spoonfuls’ truck, eager to ‘shop’ for their groceries that week.

At the time, I couldn’t fathom the idea that, after our distribution, the truck would make another delivery, and another, and another – and every time – provide relief to those who were facing food insecurity. Having worked in nonprofits with varying missions for the last seven years, I’m thrilled to be able to bring that experience, that unique lens, to my role at Lovin’ Spoonfuls and be part of an organization working tirelessly to bridge the gap between abundance and need. I’m glad to have reconnected with Lovin’ Spoonfuls!

Tell us about your background! How did you become interested in food rescue?

My first nonprofit job in the Boston area was with Project Bread, and being new to the area, I had no idea how much food was being wasted across the country, let alone in Massachusetts. While there, I saw firsthand how food insecurity was impacting our communities and I wanted to do something about it.

Food plays such an important role in our lives. I began to see that, no matter what nonprofit I moved on to, no matter the focus area (homelessness, health/health care, workforce development, poverty, etc.), that food insecurity intersected with each of these areas (and more), but other organizations aren’t always equipped to provide hunger relief on top of their existing services. I am so proud to work for an organization that is bridging that gap, the one between food abundance and need, by providing thousands of people across the state (and helping out fellow nonprofits!) with same-day delivery of healthy, nutritious food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

What passions do you bring to the job?

I bring a love of food, a sense of humor, and a passion for leaving the world better than I found it.

Do your friends/family consider you a good cook? Any signature recipes?

Hah – I hope so! I’m a lover of all things breakfast so my go-to is the breakfast trifecta: eggs, homefries, and toast. I can make a mean egg and cheese bagel as well. When I have a few hours on my hands, I like to make my mom’s pasta sauce. It’s a spicy red sauce and always reminds me of home. It’s a long, patient process, but totally worth the wait! If my partner and I are feeling extra fancy, we’ll roll out our own pasta, too. We’ve mastered the linguine, and have even made our own ravioli!

What would we find in your fridge now?

Lots of pepper jack cheese, Trader Joe’s Truffle Flavored BBQ sauce, leftover sofrito and mojo, Frank’s RedHot®, and some jalapeno cheddar tortillas.

What’s your favorite childhood food memory?

I don’t think I can pick just one. I have so many fond memories of cooking when I was a kid. From making homemade applesauce with my great-grandma with apples we picked earlier in the day, sprinkling cinnamon sugar on top of the fasnachts (German fried dough) my grandma would make every Fat Tuesday, to the Christmas Braid that my brother, mom, dad, and I would all have a hand in making or braiding together on Christmas Eve.

Who are your heroes/inspirations?

My biggest inspiration is my brother, Derek, who we lost suddenly 11 years ago. I’m always inspired and reminded of his giving spirit, his contagious laugh, and his desire to help others. I wouldn’t be where I am without him (and mom + dad!) paving the way.
