We’re focused on raising awareness and building support for systemic, sustainable solutions to issues at the intersection of wasted food, food insecurity, and the climate emergency.
We do this in a number of ways, such as:
Listening to our stakeholders and learning from their perspectives;
Lending our insights to important conversations;
Connecting stakeholders to one another;
Using our platform to elevate community members’ voices and experiences; and
Reaching out, and encouraging others to reach out, to their elected officials to push for promising policy solutions.
Each year, we identify a handful of key actions around which we work to mobilize others. Collectively, these are known as our “Advocacy Priorities.” Some of them align directly and in obvious ways with the work we do every day, and others more broadly pave the way for a more just and sustainable food system and a healthy planet.
Our Advocacy Priorities this year include:
The proposed federal NO TIME TO Waste Act as a way to enhance federal and regional government coordination around food loss and waste, build infrastructure to reduce food waste, increase food recovery, and support education around the issues.
Proposed municipal food recovery policies that prioritize food safety and quality and human dignity.
Education and awareness-building around current date labeling practices to empower consumers to make the most of their food and avoid unnecessary waste.
Efforts to reduce wasted food (including through expanded food recovery) in youth meal settings, including K-12 schools and summer and afterschool meal programs.
Educating our network through presentations in classrooms and community settings, as well as through broader awareness campaigns.
Providing guidance in classrooms and community settings, and through partner events, around how to advocate, or speak out, on the issues; sharing our Advocacy Toolkit as a resource.
Promoting food literacy in K-12 schools in MA and beyond, to foster a generation of young people who understand our food system and how to make choices within it that are good for the health of people and the planet.
Building momentum around the proposed An Act supporting the Commonwealth’s food system to streamline food system services and supports across MA through coordination of communications, information sharing, resource distribution, and more.
Remaining connected with and supporting local, state, and federal coalition efforts to address wasted food and move the needle on food insecurity.
