25 Million Pounds Rescued
We’re celebrating here at Spoonfuls because our team just hit a massive milestone: 25 million pounds of food rescued and delivered. That’s 25 million pounds of food that didn’t hit a landfill, 25 million pounds of food that didn’t go to waste, 25 million pounds of food that reached people facing food insecurity instead.
That milestone didn’t just happen overnight. Our first few years were spent tightening up our model of food rescue, figuring out what worked and what didn’t. We became more efficient, systemized, and scaled. Every truck and staff member added to the team has enabled us to rescue more food, and a huge amount of growth has happened just in the last few years! One example: It took us four years to rescue our first 1 million pounds of food. We hit 10 million in 2018. We’ve rescued 15 million more pounds since (4 million pounds each year since 2020)!
Our team, Board of Directors, Culinary Board, Friends of Spoonfuls, Community Advisory Board Members, donors, and other supporters, past and present, have all played a part in making this happen. From our Founder and Executive Director using her personal car to rescue food, to today, where we have 9 (soon to be 10) food rescue routes, around 30 staff members, and bear the title “New England’s largest food rescue.” To everyone who has played a role in the past 12 years – thank you.
To mark the occasion and help us set course for the next 25 million pounds, we’ve launched a #25for25 campaign! We hope that you will consider making a #25for25 gift today. Right now your impact is doubled thanks to Spoonfuls’ supporter, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, who’s matching donations up to $25,000.
Plus, we’ll be celebrating this milestone all year long! To start, we’re heading back to the place where Spoonfuls hosted our launch party and many other events in our early days: Myers + Chang. Join us on June 21 at 6 PM for a great night of delicious food and craft cocktails as we celebrate this massive milestone! And a big shout out to Arbella Insurance, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Whole Foods Market for supporting our food rescue work by sponsoring this milestone celebration.
