The Ultimate Tailgate Party

December 5, 2011 Updated: January 24, 2024

On November 13th, Sam’s hosted the Ultimate Tailgate Party benefiting Lovin’ Spoonfuls. With 12 MVP chefs on hand cooking versions of their favorite tailgate food, the event raised over $60,000! Mayor Thomas Menino was ‘Spoonfuls’ guest of honor, and presented Executive Director Ashley Stanley with a check for $10,000 from the City of Boston. We had a picture perfect day in November, and there is no better setting than Sam’s for some football, some food and some ‘Team Lovin’ spirit!

Guests were treated to Asian sloppy joe’s from Ming Tsai, candied bacon grilled cheese from Asia Mei at Sam’s, ‘Patriot Oysters’ from Island Creek, salmon tartare tacos from Joanne Chang & Karen Akunowicz at Myers + Chang, Nantucket Bay scallop ceviche from Gabriel Frasca & Amanda Lydon at Straight Wharf and Ventuno Restaurants on Nantucket, and a pig-roast with homemade nuoc-cham from Toro & Coppa’s Jamie Bissonette and The Herb Lyceum’s Will Gilson.  Board member Christopher Myers led the crowd in a spirited ‘pre-game speech’ as he made a plea for supporters to match the Mayor’s check. Hands went up, and everyone was reminded that hunger relief is indeed a team-sport.

We couldn’t believe that there was ANYTHING left over by evening’s end, but Lovin’ Spoonfuls packed up ten trays of food and delivered it to the Haley House soup kitchen after the event ended.  We send heartfelt thanks to our friends, chefs, supporters and everyone who made the Tailgate such a huge success:  especially the team at Sam’s, Proforma Printing, Peterson’s Party Center, MS Walker, Gosling’s & Twinfocus Capital.
